Mum invents new way to make reading fun for kids

They say necessity is the mother of invention, so after nightly battles to motivate her sons to read for fun, this mother invented a new interactive book that rewards kids each time they turn the page.

What kept Karen Robertson up at night was concern her kids were falling behind in school because they were such reluctant readers. One night, she literally had a dream about a new way for kids to interact with a book. She turned that dream into reality and now has a patent pending.

She spent 18 months working on the idea of incorporating compartments containing toys into a book before recently releasing her first book, Treasure Kai and the Lost Gold of Shark Island, which she wrote.

Karen wants kids to experience the thrill and success of finishing a book so she keeps them motivated with toy rewards and she made sure the reading level is easy by working with a speech pathologist and literacy tutor on the text.

“Finding books that interest and engage beginning, emergent or reluctant readers is always a challenge! Well, we’ve found the perfect book to get kids enthused about reading. Kids First usually does not promote products of any kind, but we’ve been using Treasure Kai in our classes and our teachers and students are raving about it!”  Sonja Walker, Director, Kids First www.kids-first.com.au

Your viewers might like to know how Karen turned a literal dream into a product and her tips for how others can turn their ideas into reality as well.

Karen lives in Sydney with her husband, Chris and two sons – Connor (11) and Scott (8). Prior to writing her first book and launching publishing company, Treasure Bound Books, Karen had an 18-year career in marketing. Her mission is to help other parents spot reading problems early, before they impact a child’s self esteem and behaviour.

Ends.
